What is a contact sheet, and why photographers still love it
A contact sheet, also called a proof sheet, is one page that shows every frame of a roll of film printed small, side by side. Photographers use it to review a whole roll at once and circle the best frames before printing them larger.

What is a contact sheet?
It is a print made by laying strips of developed film directly on photographic paper and exposing them, so each frame appears at its original size. Because the film touches the paper, it is called a contact print. Wikipedia has a short entry on the contact print.
The result is a page of small positive frames with the edge markings of the film visible around them.
What is the difference between a contact sheet and a proof sheet?
In everyday use the terms mean the same thing. Searches such as what is a contact sheet in photography are common, and answers use both names. Proof refers to the idea that you are proofing the roll, checking the work before you commit to larger prints.
How do photographers use one?
They look at the sheet with a loupe, compare similar frames and mark the ones they want with a red or yellow grease pencil. A circle means print this. A cross means reject. The marked sheet then guides the printing session.
It is a fast way to edit. Seeing all frames together shows which expression, angle or exposure is best.
What is on the edge of the film?
Film strips carry frame numbers and manufacturer markings along the rebate, the clear border outside the picture. On a contact sheet those marks show up too, which is part of the look. Proofsheet recreates the idea with its own edge print: the app name, the look and the roll number.
How does Proofsheet make a digital one?
When a roll develops, the app lays out the frames as film strips with frame numbers, adds edge print and a QR code, and lets you circle your picks in red. The marks are a circle for picked and a cross for crossed out, as on a real sheet.
You can export it as 9:16 or 1:1, choose a Lab, Strip or Grid layout and save single prints. See the proof sheet.
How do I use it to choose photos?
Review the sheet once without stopping, then again to circle your favorites. Compare near-identical frames and keep one. Then save those prints. For a group roll, the host's crew sheet collects everyone's frames so the group can pick together. See crew rolls.
What can a contact sheet teach you?
Looking at a whole roll shows habits. You may see that you shoot three nearly identical frames, that the best picture is usually the second one, or that your horizon tilts right. Photographers read sheets the way writers reread a draft: to see patterns, not single lines.
Because a sheet shows sequence, it also shows pacing. A good roll has variety: wide and close, still and moving, people and places.
How do I read the edge markings?
On film, the rebate carries a frame number under each picture, often with an arrow, and the manufacturer's name and film type along the edge. On a sheet, these let you find the right negative later. In Proofsheet, frame numbers appear under each frame and edge print shows the app name, the look and the roll number, which keeps the same habit of labeling each frame.
The line makes a sheet identifiable even when it is cropped for a story.
Contact sheet, desktop software or the Photos app?
Desktop photo software also has a contact sheet feature that prints a grid of thumbnails. The Photos app shows a grid too. What a proof sheet adds is a fixed frame count and an editing mark: you circle the keepers once and treat the rest as done. A finite roll makes that edit easier than a camera roll of thousands.
How do I print or share one?
Proofsheet exports a sheet as an image in 9:16 or 1:1. Share it from the share sheet or save it to Photos. If you want a paper copy, print the saved image from any printer or photo service.
Single prints are also available if you prefer to share one frame at a time, with the stock name and frame number on the paper border.
What is a good way to start with a first roll?
Shoot a roll of 12 frames in one place on one day. Use the same film look throughout so the sheet looks consistent. Develop it the next morning, and circle three favorites. A short roll gives you a sheet you can read at a glance, and it teaches you quickly what you like to shoot.
If you want to practice with friends, make a crew roll for an evening. Everyone's frames end up on one sheet, and the group circles its favorites together.
Common questions about proof sheets
People ask whether a proof sheet shows the final quality of a photo. It does not: the frames are small, so it shows composition, expression and exposure rather than fine detail. They also ask whether it replaces a camera roll. It does not either. Proofsheet saves the developed photos to your library, and the sheet is a way to look at them together.
Why bring back a slow format?
Because the page works as a story. One image says here is the whole night, and the viewer can see how the roll unfolded from the first frame to the last. A single photo cannot do that. The wait before developing helps too, because it gives the frames time to feel like memories instead of files.
How do I read a contact sheet, step by step?
Photographers read a sheet in passes, not frame by frame.
- Look at the whole page once without stopping, to feel the rhythm of the roll.
- Follow the frame numbers. A run of near-identical frames means you were working one subject.
- Check each run with a loupe and compare sharpness, expression and eyes.
- Circle the best frame of each run and cross out the clear misses.
- Look at the circled frames together. If three look alike, keep one.
Which marks do photographers use, and what are the app equivalents?
The marks stay simple on purpose, so a sheet can be read at a glance.
| Mark | Meaning | In Proofsheet |
|---|---|---|
| Circle | Print this one | Grease pencil mode, tap a frame |
| Cross | Reject | Tap the circled frame again |
| Loupe | Check sharpness | Loupe button, then drag over the sheet |
How do the loupe and zoom work on iPhone?
Tap Loupe and drag your finger over the sheet. A magnifier follows it, and releasing on a frame opens that print. Zoom shows bigger frames, four or three across, for sheets with many frames. Tapping a frame opens the print, and you can swipe for the next one.
In grease pencil mode the same drag marks a frame instead of opening it. Tap once to circle, and tap again to cross it out.
What does a crew contact sheet look like?
A crew sheet groups strips by the initials each friend chose. A header shows the totals, for example 8 cameras and 96 frames. That makes the page read like the work of a whole team, and each person can find their own strip fast. Read more about crew rolls.
Why is the sheet a good format for sharing?
It shows sequence at a glance. A story viewer sees the whole night in one image, with frame numbers and edge print that look like a real strip. The page also has a built-in call to action, since the QR code in the lower border leads friends to the app. Export it as 9:16 for stories or 1:1 for posts.
What should I do with the frames I did not circle?
Nothing. The developed photos are saved to your library, so they are still there. The sheet is a way to decide what to show, not a way to delete. If you want to revisit an old roll, every sheet is in the Binder, which holds All, Crew and Week segments.
