What is 35mm film?

Updated · 4 min read

35mm film is film about 35 millimeters wide. Still cameras use it in a cassette called 135, with a frame of 24 by 36 millimeters and rolls of 24 or 36 exposures. The name comes from the width of the strip, which cinema film also uses. It is the most common film size in the world.

What does 35mm mean?

The number is the width of the film strip, about 35 millimeters. It has nothing to do with the size of the picture. The strip is wider than the frame because it carries sprocket holes along both edges and a margin for edge markings. Wikipedia explains the format under 135 film.

The width was taken from motion picture film, which is where the format began. Still cameras later ran the same stock through their bodies sideways, and a standard cassette emerged.

What is 135 film?

135 is the name of the cassette format that holds still-camera 35mm film. The cassette is a small metal canister with a felt-lipped slot for the film to emerge, and it fits in a very wide range of cameras. When people say 35mm film in a store, they mean this.

A frame measures 24 by 36 millimeters, a 3:2 shape. Digital cameras that call themselves full frame mimic this size, which is why the word shows up on camera spec sheets.

How many frames are on a roll?

The common counts are 24 and 36. Shorter rolls of 12 exist, and a few long rolls exist too. See how many photos are on a roll of film for the comparison with 120 and disposables.

Why does 35mm still matter?

Because it is cheap, portable and widely supported. A 35mm camera fits in a pocket or a coat, film is still made and labs know the format well. A bigger negative gives more detail, and a smaller one gives a more convenient camera. Most people find 35mm a good middle ground.

It also suits the roll habit. Thirty-six frames is a long, rich roll, and 24 is a more focused one.

What does the 35mm look refer to in apps?

Many camera apps use 35mm to mean a general film look: soft grain, warm color and a 3:2 frame. It is shorthand, and the apps do not scan film. Proofsheet does not claim to match 35mm stocks. Its twelve looks are original digital styles, and its roll sizes of 12, 24 and 36 are chosen to echo how rolls feel.

See film looks for the list and the film camera page for how rolls work in the app. Proofsheet is not on the App Store yet.

Where do the numbers on the edge come from?

Along the border of a 35mm strip you will see frame numbers, arrows and the maker's film name. These are printed at the factory, and they show up on a contact sheet because the film touches the paper. A digital proof sheet echoes them with its own edge print: the app name, the look and the roll number. Read what is a contact sheet for how photographers use them.

Is 35mm good for beginners?

Yes. Cameras are plentiful, film is easy to find and labs process it everywhere. Beginners should start with a mid-speed color film such as ISO 400, shoot in daylight and take the roll to a lab. The guide on what is analog photography covers the wider picture.

What are the parts of a 35mm cassette?

  • The spool, which the film wraps around inside the canister.
  • The felt lip at the slot, which keeps light out as the film moves.
  • The leader, a tongue of film that sticks out for loading.
  • The DX code, a pattern on the canister some cameras read to set the film speed.

How do I load and unload a 35mm camera?

  1. Open the back and drop the cassette into the left chamber.
  2. Pull the leader across to the take-up spool and catch it.
  3. Close the back and advance until the counter reaches one.
  4. Shoot the roll, then rewind the film into the cassette before opening the back.
  5. Take the cassette out in shade and send it to a lab.

Should I choose 35mm or a bigger format?

For a first roll, 35mm. It is cheaper, cameras are easier to find and the pictures are good. Medium format has more detail and a slower, more deliberate feel. It costs more per frame and the cameras are bigger. You can move up later if you want to.

If you simply want the feel of a roll, try a 12-frame roll in the film camera first.

What is the difference between 35mm film and 35mm cinema film?

The strip is the same width, but the pictures are laid out differently. Cinema cameras run the film vertically, with a frame about four sprocket holes tall. Still cameras run it horizontally, and each frame spans eight holes, which gives the larger 24 by 36 millimeter picture. This is why a still frame is larger than a movie frame from the same stock.

It also explains the 3:2 shape of full-frame stills against the wider shape of cinema.

Why do digital cameras say full frame?

Full frame means a sensor about the size of a 35mm film frame, 24 by 36 millimeters. Smaller sensors are described by how much they crop that view. The phrase carries the old film size into the digital world, and it is why photographers still talk about focal lengths in 35mm equivalents. A phone sensor is far smaller, and the phone's spec sheet often quotes an equivalent focal length too.
